Tournament results this season show orthodox fighters losing to southpaw opponents at a noticeably higher rate than historical averages, prompting coaches to revisit how much specific southpaw training young fighters actually get.
The imbalance is partly structural: with fewer left-handed fighters in most gyms, orthodox boxers simply get less sparring experience against the stance, while southpaws spar against orthodox opponents by default nearly every session.
"Our righties are seeing a southpaw maybe twice a month. Our one lefty spars an orthodox opponent every single day." — Amateur boxing coach
Several gyms say they're now actively recruiting southpaw sparring partners specifically to close the gap, rather than treating stance-specific preparation as something to address only before a known matchup.
